Zermatt with its access to 394 km of downhill skiing and 59 individual pistes, serviced by 40 ski lifts, ranks amongst some of Switzerland's largest ski resorts. Its high altitude location amongst stunning scenery of the Matterhorn makes it possible to skii and board back to the resort. Should there be a lack of snow, Zermatt is able to make its own copycat snow using its 350 snow canons.
Although the resort lays claim to some of the world's best skiing, there is still plenty on offer for all levels from beginner through to expert making Zermatt ski holidays a great choice for all the family. The skiing area is in 3 sections with one being over the border in Italy and is inter linked by more than 70 lifts, including an underground funicular railway with the capacity to uplift 50,000 skiers per hour. The easiest slopes are to be found on the Gornegrat whilst the Sunnegga offers thrills for both intermediates and experts alike. For the skiing guru there are almost 50 specialist ski programmes on offer with fixed dates. These include skiing with classical music, skiing with indoor golf, and skiing with gastronomical delights, to name but a few. Heli-skiing is also very popular with a wide range of options.
Zermatt is also becoming known for its fantastic snowboarding facilities and offers plenty to keep all levels of boarder entertained. The amazing Gravity Park on the glacier is normally open every day of the year.
